podcasts can be great marketing tools; they help to build relationships with customers and potential customers by enabling them to interact with your company and brand.

podcasts build a personality around your company and help people get to know you. And because we all prefer to buy from people we know and like, a podcast can increase your sales considerably.

podcasts can also give you kudos and credibility. If done correctly they can position you as expert in your field. We all prefer to buy from an expert (rather than a salesperson), and the media prefers to talk to experts, so podcasts can also be used to increase your PR coverage.

podcasts are web based so they can be an excellent Internet Marketing tool. They can attract new people to your web site, give them an incentive to visit your site regularly (making it “sticky”) and give them a reason to tell others about you, your podcast and your company.

podcasts can help you build a database of people interested in what you have to offer.

podcasts are a perfect way to reach busy people. The podcast can be downloaded and listened to when it suits them, maybe in their “down time”, for example in the car, via their PC, on their iPod or MP3 player, on the tube, at the gym… etc

podcasts help you compete by offering people information in a format that works for them. Many people are “auditory”, in other words they like to hear things. Giving auditory people a DVD to watch or a brochure to read makes it harder for them to learn about you and what you offer, it’s a barrier to gathering information. podcasts are very versatile. They can be emailed (as MP3s or as a link), be made available via your web site as a stream or as an audio file for download, and, for additional marketing opportunities they can be listed on iTunes and other podcast sites.

what makes a good podcast?
A good podcast needs to work for both you (see above) and your customers. To do this there are two essential areas to consider.

one: Your podcast must be compelling. This means it must contain content that makes your customers and potential customers want to listen to it. And it must also be useful to you and help showcase your company’s products or services in such a way that people want to buy from you, without feeling they are being sold to.

A podcast that simply tries to sell or act like an audio catalogue will be like asking your customers to listen to a very long, very uninspiring advert. Why would anyone do that?

two: Your podcast must be high quality and reinforce the standards and level of service you provide. It needs to reflect positively on your company and instil a sense of trust in your company and its products or services.

To do this you need to ensure that the podcast is high quality in two key areas…

High quality audio. Your podcast should be created using professional audio equipment, well edited and easy on the ear. Everything you’d expect from a well-produced piece of audio with high broadcast standard production values.

High quality professional presentation. You want people to listen to this and come back for more; so ensure you give them quality content, professionally presented, by someone who knows what they are doing and has an engaging voice. Someone who can present with a natural air, sound convincing and credible and, where necessary, can bring out the very best in you and your staff.

Making a poor quality podcast that ignores any of the above can be damaging to your company. It’s better not to have a podcast than to have one that gives all the wrong messages about your brand.

Podcasts can be very powerful so make sure yours is good. A bad podcast can, at worst, damage your company’s reputation and sales, and at best it will simply be a waste of time and money.
