VISITING MR GREEN
TOURING
The celebrated Warren Mitchell offers a rare stage appearance in this play that attracted favourable reaction on Broadway when created by Eli Wallach. A Jewish widower, Mr Green (played by Mitchell) is almost hit by the speeding car of Ross Gardiner (David Sturzaker) who is a brash corporate executive. Found guilty of reckless driving, Gardiner is ordered to spend time with Green and so a bonding develops.
The storyline has poignancy and progresses from an early hostility through to mutual understanding as the two recognise their vulnerabilities and shared humanity. That journey, however, is both quirky and difficult and requires significant soul-searching as ‘secrets’ are peeled off and painfully revealed. It also permits humour.
Jeff Baron’s play succeeds with the deft direction of Patrick Garland who disguises any possibility to drift into sentimentality. Fortunately the playing neatly avoids this as well and is a quiet tour de force by Mitchell and Sturzaker.
