GODSPELL
TOURING (reviewed at THE THEATRE ROYAL, BRIGHTON)
Well, so far this month (February, 2008) it really is ‘the seventies revisited’ – with a new production of “Godspell” out and about and touring. The show was originally presented in 1971 and has rarely been off the scene since. This production is new but frankly not ‘new-improved.’ This potentially lively and engaging show needs a lively and innovative treatment especially as it has been attempted by thousands of amateur /community players, schools, church and youth club casts. I must have seen it 15 or more times … and I have seen it 15 or more times better!
This production has energy from a lively cast but few new ideas and many tired old ones. What a disappointment. The score is there – “Prepare Ye” “Day by Day” and the wonderful “On the Willows.” The sensational Tiffany Graves is there with Tom Bradley and Richard Meek but even they couldn’t save the evening! Sadly bereft of new ideas, it remains pedestrian and bland.
“Godspell” sparkles when it has originality – the danger of presenting a show already seen by audiences for 37 years - is that ‘the same old stuff’ cannot be ladled out in such a casual manner.
