DANCING QUEEN
TOURING
Calling all Super Troupers and Dancing Queens! The programme notes read that this production celebrates timeless hits from the pop phenomenon, ABBA! And the show does exactly that - but there is the added bonus of sufficient feathers to re-tog 4,000 duvets; several tons of sequins; fake tan that must be delivered by container lorry - and so many luminous teeth; now that was scary.
“Dancing Queen” is an animated album that roams around the seventies; included are such legendary numbers as Staying Alive, YMCA, My Girl and Shout, chart successes not normally associated with Abba. But Abba fans are well supplied with Take A Chance, Fernando, Mamma Mia – indeed a generous selection of their ‘timeless hits.’
Lasers, lights, legs, co-ordinated colour, costumes, glitz and glamour usually hit the stage all at once … … and if I happened upon the Theatre once a year, I suspect, I would be overwhelmed. I wasn’t because I see so much! To me the show was mechanistic, the smiles sprayed on and the chorus work ragged. I was, sadly, underwhelmed and disappointed. New productions such as ‘Babes in Arms’ and ‘Lady be Good’ set the current standard for choreography and dance delivery – with deliveries so sharp they cut! “Dancing Queen” doesn’t!!
