THE CHANGELING
TOURING
The English Touring Theatre is travelling in style with Thomas Middleton’s classic tale of lust, jealousies and betrayal. It must additionally be spending a fortune on stage blood because this production does not shirk from the script’s inherent deceptions and cruelties.
Beatrice-Joanna (a stunning debut from Anna Koval) wants to marry the handsome Alsemero (Gidion Turner) but her Father has arranged her betrothal to another. Beatrice sets about frustrating her Father’s wishes and her undoing begins …. blackmail, intimidation and hysteria are minor components to this classic story.
It is offered pace and clarity by Director Steven Unwin and has justifiably earned plaudits en route around the UK. This is not a production for the feint hearted!
CHICAGO
CAMBRIDGE THEATRE
Chicago continues as a triumph. The casting changes with almost indecent regularity but appears to me as uniformly excellent. Telling the tale of American hoodlums, gangsters, molls, murder and corruption both the score and choreography (originated by Fosse) add class and style to its murky subject matter. Played virtually as a ‘concert platform’ piece, the show relies on performance rather than scenery and has attracted a long list of leading players.
