BLOOD BROTHERS
PHOENIX THEATRE, CHARING CROSS ROAD
Willy Russell’s evergreen musical about class, council estates, twins and murder – and will it ever end? Dear God I hope so. I am bewildered by the ovation this show appears to get every night. I have seen it three times – disliked it on each occasion – and been bemused by each audience as they cheer themselves into a frenzy. It has one ‘hit’ song that is positioned to exact its full emotional impact and obviously does.
To me this show seemed dated on its first night … whenever that was … but it has an audience but I can guarantee I won’t be joining it again!
BRIEF LIVES
TOURING (reviewed at the RICHMOND THEATRE)
Roy Dotrice wowed audiences in the 60's in Patrick Garland's Brief Lives, so it's no surprise that he's exceptionally
comfortable as John Aubrey in this revival. He plays the 17th century scribbler as a cross between a favourite old uncle
and Catweazel.
As Aubrey shuffles around his cluttered room, he tells tales of actors, school teachers, adventurers and royalty.
The stories are stuffed with scandal and gossip, and delivered expertly by an 84 year old Dotrice (Aubrey died aged 71).
This production (also directed by writer Garland) is short, two 45 minute parts, but you do get the oddly fascinating treat
of watching Aubrey snooze on stage while you tuck into your interval ice cream.
